Happy 5th birthday, Ethereum!

Today, Ethereum is celebrating its fifth anniversary (since its mainnet was launched on July 30, 2015).

THE original Ethereum white paper (titled: “Ethereum White Paper: Next generation smart contract and decentralized application platform”) was written by the Russian-Canadian programmer, Vitaly Dmitriyevich Buterin (better known as “Vitalik Buterin”) and published on his blog in December 2013 .

See how Vitalik described Ethereum at the time of its release:

“What Ethereum intends to provide is a blockchain with a fully developed full Turing programming language that can be used to create ‘contracts’ that can be used to encode arbitrary state transition functions, allowing users to create any of the systems described above, as well as many others that we have not yet imagined, simply by writing the logic in a few lines of code “.

Launch of Ethereum

Ethereum was announced by Vitalik on January 27, 2014 on the 2nd of the North American Bitcoin Conference in Miami, Florida.

During his talk, Vitalik said that one of the uses of Ethereum was to create cryptocurrencies for specialized purposes:

“We are not going to have a coin. We will have thousands of coins ”.

About six months later (on June 7, 2014), the eight co-founders of Ethereum – Vitalik Buterin, Anthony Di Iorio, Charles Hoskinson, Mihai Alisie, Amir Chetrit, Joseph Lubin, Gavin Wood and Jeffrey Wilke – met at a home rented in Zug, Switzerland (a city that has been nicknamed “Crypto Valley”). At this meeting, Vitalik proposed that the Ethereum project continue as a non-profit organization.

Ethereum Development was funded through an initial coin offering (ICO) between July and August 2014, with participants paying for the Ether token (ETH) with Bitcoin (BTC). This ICO raised 3,700 BTC in the first 12 hours and a total of US $ 18 million was raised.

The Ethereum Foundation’s latest proof of concept prototype, codenamed “Frontier”, went live on July 30, 2015.

Although Frontier was becoming publicly available on that date, it only offered a “command line” user interface and its goal was to allow developers to use it in a live test environment (even if the platform was handling funds reais).

Release coordinator Vinay Gupta told the Coindesk:

“Don’t put too much value at risk, unless you are really sure you know what you’re doing and are confident in your network risk assessment.”

Fifth birthday

Recently, journalist and podcaster Laura Shin launched the episode # 183 of his podcast “Unchained”; with Vitalik’s participation.

The first question Shin asked Vitalik was what his thoughts and feelings were about Ethereum’s fifth anniversary.

Vitalik replied:

“Ethereum has definitely come a long way in the past five years, and it has been really impressive to see the change… and even to see how more and more changes are outside of mine and even beyond the control of the Ethereum Foundation. “
